Event Description
In this upcoming TEPHI Grand Rounds webinar, Katherine Wells, DrPH, MPH, will share insights from the 2025 West Texas measles outbreak — the largest U.S. measles outbreak in over two decades. Wells will walk us through the key elements of the local public health response, including case investigation, vaccination campaigns, and media engagement. She will also discuss the challenges local health departments faced, such as funding disruptions, misinformation, political pressure, and multi-jurisdictional coordination, and highlight lessons learned for future outbreaks.
Wells serves as the director of public health for the City of Lubbock, where she has led a major expansion of services and staffing, establishing the department as a regional public health leader. She is the past president of the Texas Association of City and County Health Officials (TACCHO), a current board member of the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), and holds a doctorate in public health from the University of North Carolina and a Master of Public Health from Texas A&M University.
